The Gospel of Restoration
Ask most people what the gospel is and they will tell you that it is about people going to heaven when they die. They might throw in that we are saved by grace through faith and other theologically correct phrases. They would be right, but they would also be leaving out an important part of the gospel. The restoration of the world!
The gospel is the whole story of God from creation to resurrection and the restoration of all things. If we leave out the full story, most disciples only see their role as sharing the gospel with others so they go to heaven when they die. We must evangelize and make disciples and plant churches! But, if that is all we do it can leave us feeling like the rest of our lives are meaningless. A sacred/secular splitting occurs in our souls. But if we realize that the gospel is about God restoring all things to himself, then everything matters. Evangelism, disciplemaking, work, play, relationship building, family, friends, eating, drinking, career building, business development, enjoying the outdoors - all things are a part of living out the gospel if we see our lives in light of the whole story of God.
All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future - all are yours, and you are of Christ and Christ is of God. 1 Corinthians 3:21-23.
