Is It the Spirit Speaking Or Is It Just You?

I did a message recently titled, “Whispers.” One of the questions I am often asked is, “How do you know if it is the Spirit speaking or your conscience?”

My short answer is “Yes!” Candidly I just don’t worry about it. God created our conscience. We bear his image. He has placed knowledge of his moral will within us. When we listen to our conscience we are in essence listening to God.

And the Spirit also speaks to us. Ephesians 1:13-14 says, “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”

Paul, writing to a church in first century Turkey, told them that they received the promised Holy Spirit as soon as they believed. The word he uses here for belief is not intellectual assent, but trust. It’s the kind of trust Jesus wanted from his disciples when he said to them, “Follow me.”

At some point when we follow Jesus, he places his Holy Spirit within us. This is the Spirit that speaks to us in whispers (1 Kings 19) and prays with us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26).

So, when you sense that God may be saying something to you or giving you wisdom in making a decision is it your conscience or the Spirit? Yes.

Let’s thank God for both!
